Today when we suffer a blackout we are not content to simply light a candle. An interruption in connectivity hinders the operation of all equipment and affects companies that are not prepared. This results in obstacles to the implementation of mission critical tasks, the irreparable harm to the reputation of an organization, the loss of faith among consumers, and ultimately, loss of income.

Helpless dependence around the continuous availability of electricity makes it imperative for businesses and even households make suitable arrangements for backup power to fight the power outages that can strike at any time without notice. Such emergencies can be managed through the use of electric generators, whether gasoline, diesel or other fuel. These units act as backup power systems to supply electricity to critical loads or the entire family or business.
Gasoline generators, electrical generators whether or not gasoline-powered devices with the principle of electromagnetic induction to generate electricity from a mechanical energy source such as a turbine rotated by the force of falling water, wind turbines, a crank, solar energy, an internal combustion engine or any other similar source. Based on the type of requirements that are directed towards, the generator can be classified into two types - portable and fixed.
As its name suggests, portable units are not designed for permanent installation. Instead, work with separate applications and are designed to temporarily stimulate some critical applications via external cables. These are usually functional for a runtime of less than 12 hours, and provide a power of 500W to 17.5kW. Different models of portable units can operate one or more specific energy sources, such as gasoline, diesel, bio-diesel, propane or natural gas. Most portable units are air cooled and therefore must be operated in the open to make maximum use of ventilation air. They must also be taken to protect against rain, snow and other elements, otherwise the vital parts can rust and corrode, severely reducing the durability of the equipment. Often, portable units have no provision for sound insulation and can be very noisy in operation. Then there is the additional effort needs to be done in drag drive storage, connect, and refuel the tank, every time there is a blackout.
Portable units are typically used when the backup power needs are low or only temporary. These serve as useful accessories in residential applications, which can provide energy for lighting, sump pumps, essential appliances like refrigerators and specific air conditioners and vital medical equipment. They also find use in construction sites, farms, motor homes and recreational vehicles, and during camping trips. These units are generally used in the trailers where the production of energy generated is small enough. Also, being compact and lightweight, these devices can be conveniently stored in the compartment of a trailer or the back of a tow vehicle.
Despite the many advantages associated with mobile units, are not adequate to address the high energy requirements, such as a company for very long periods of time. In this case, the generator permanent reserve is aimed at demanding and urgent requirements of energy companies. This unit provides power to be connected in the main distribution panel and can be started manually or automatically in the event of a blackout. In a power failure, an automatic transfer switch isolates the electrical wiring of the electrical network and signals the generator to start working. Gasoline generators begin to feed power to the lines. When power is restored, the reverse action takes place, where the input power is once again obtained from the service lines and gas generators break down and enters a standby mode. The transfer time is about 10 to 30 seconds. Therefore, it is essential to make provisions for the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in the middle, so that computer systems and applications will not be closed off during the transfer time. In addition, it makes practical sense to ensure the availability of UPS at a time when the generator is turned off once every 50 to 100 hours in order to change the engine oil. Stationary diesel generators are capable of withstanding very high power levels in the range of 3 kW to several hundred kilowatts, for long periods of time.
All said and done, choosing the right type of generator should be guided primarily by the needs of the user. While portable units are less expensive than fixed, their usefulness is limited to small power requirements for short periods. Moreover, while the stationary gasoline generators are better suited to provide high continuous power for several hours at a stretch, can not make economic sense in the case of time requirements and infrequent.
